The history of Unix starts back in 1969, when Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie and others started working on the "little-used PDP-7 in a corner" at Bell Labs and what was to become BSD. Lots of people ask why they should be running their critical programs on such an outdated system. BSD is however not outdated, and probably will not be for a long time. BSD was given free to universities and colleges and people all over the world have worked on its code, shared knowledge, and fixed bugs for 30 years.

BSD is an extremely stable system. It also uses less resources to run, crashes very little and very rarely needs to be rebooted. Windows on the other hand needs to be rebooted often and crashes often.
